Frequently Asked Questions
Short answers below cover the most common Suffolk County questions. Each answer links to the page on this site that goes into the topic in detail.
Where do I search Suffolk County court records?
Start with MassCourts eAccess, the state's free public case portal. Pick the right Trial Court department, Superior, BMC, District, Probate and Family, Housing, or Land, and the Suffolk division. A countywide name search can miss a case if the wrong department is selected. See Suffolk County court records for the full walkthrough.
Is there a single Suffolk County Clerk of Court?
No. Massachusetts uses clerk or register offices by Trial Court department. Superior Court records sit with the Superior Court clerk. Probate and divorce records sit with the Probate register. Land records belong to the Suffolk County Registry of Deeds, and marriage records belong to city or town clerks. The Clerk of Court page maps every office.
Can I see actual court documents online?
Docket information is online for most case types, but many pleadings, orders, and certified copies require a clerk request. SJC Rule 1:24, plus impoundment orders and confidentiality statutes, keeps some files off the public screen. A courthouse computer may show more than the home version of MassCourts.
Why can't I find a criminal case I know existed?
It may sit in another Trial Court department, be listed under a different spelling, be sealed, be restricted by CORI law, be juvenile, or use an older docket format that does not appear remotely. Call the clerk with the docket number if known. The arrest records page covers Suffolk criminal searches.
How do I get a certified copy of a divorce decree?
Contact Suffolk Probate and Family Court, because divorce records are Probate and Family Court records. Provide both spouses' names, the docket number if known, the approximate year, and the document you need. See marriage and divorce records for the request process and fees.
Where do I get a Boston marriage certificate?
Order it from the City of Boston Registry Division at Boston City Hall. The certificate comes from the city where the couple filed intentions, not just from where the ceremony happened. Other Suffolk municipalities keep their own clerk records.
Does Suffolk County publish a public jail roster?
No full public live roster was located on the Sheriff's official website. Use VINELink Massachusetts, contact the facility, or check the court docket for bail or commitment orders. State prison inmates use the Massachusetts DOC locator; federal inmates use BOP. See inmate records.
How do I visit someone in a Suffolk County jail?
Use the Sheriff's official visiting page and confirm which facility holds the person. Adult visitors need valid government photo ID. Schedules and rules vary by housing unit. Check for lockdowns or restrictions before traveling to Nashua Street Jail or South Bay House of Correction.
Can I search active warrants online in Suffolk County?
No official countywide active warrant list was located. Check the court docket for default entries, contact the clerk for the issuing court, or speak with counsel. Unofficial warrant sites can be wrong and should not be trusted. See warrant records.
What is CORI?
CORI is Criminal Offender Record Information, the regulated Massachusetts criminal-history product controlled by M.G.L. c. 6, § 172. It is different from a public docket. Who may get CORI, and for what purpose, is set by statute. An individual can request their own CORI through the state.
Can a Massachusetts criminal record be sealed?
Some records can be sealed after waiting periods or after qualifying non-conviction outcomes. M.G.L. c. 276, sections 100A through 100C, set out the rules. Sealing limits public access and CORI dissemination, but the record is not destroyed. Expungement is narrower.
Are juvenile court records public in Suffolk County?
Generally no. Juvenile delinquency, care and protection, and youthful offender records have special confidentiality protections under M.G.L. c. 119 and juvenile court rules. They are not searched like adult dockets, and access usually requires party status, counsel, or a court order.
Where are probate records filed in Suffolk County?
Estates, wills, guardianships, and conservatorships for Suffolk are filed in Suffolk Probate and Family Court at 24 New Chardon Street, Boston. The Chelsea satellite at 120 Broadway serves people closer to Chelsea, Revere, or Winthrop. See probate records for the process.
Where are deeds and mortgages recorded?
Land records for Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop are recorded with the Suffolk County Registry of Deeds at 24 New Chardon Street, Boston. Searches run through the registry and the statewide MassLandRecords portal. See Registry of Deeds.
Can I pay a Suffolk traffic ticket online?
Yes for civil motor vehicle infractions. Use the official Massachusetts pay-your-traffic-ticket guide or the court instructions on the citation. Criminal traffic charges, including OUI, require court appearance. See traffic court records.
What is the difference between a court traffic record and an RMV driving record?
The court record shows the citation, the court, the hearing, the plea, and the disposition. The RMV record shows license history, suspensions, surchargeable events, and reinstatement requirements. The two interact but are not the same file, and clearing one does not automatically clear the other.
How do I request public records from the Suffolk Sheriff?
Use the Sheriff's public records request page. Describe the records, the facility, the date range, and any names or booking numbers. Some inmate, medical, safety, and investigatory records may be withheld or redacted. The public records page covers the request process.
Can I bring my phone to a Suffolk County courthouse?
Courthouse electronics policies vary by building and judge. Assume that recording is restricted and that security screening applies. Check the court location page or call the clerk before bringing equipment, and expect to power devices off in a courtroom.
How do I get legal help if I cannot afford a lawyer in Suffolk County?
For criminal cases, ask the court about Committee for Public Counsel Services appointed counsel. For civil matters, use the Boston Court Service Center, Greater Boston Legal Services, the Volunteer Lawyers Project, or the Massachusetts Legal Resource Finder. Many sealing clinics also help with CORI petitions.
How do I change a Suffolk County court date?
File the proper motion or request with the court and notify the other parties. Do not skip the date. Failure to appear can cause a default, a dismissal, a judgment, or a warrant in a criminal case. The clerk for the department can confirm the right form.
Are adoption records public in Suffolk County?
No. Adoption records are confidential under Massachusetts law, including M.G.L. c. 210, § 5D. Access is allowed only by statute or court order. Probate and Family Court adoption searches should be treated as confidential unless specific statutory access applies.
Can I search federal cases from Suffolk County in MassCourts?
No. Federal cases are searched through PACER, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, or free sources like CourtListener. Federal dockets do not appear in the state's MassCourts portal.
Who prosecutes Suffolk County criminal cases?
State crimes are prosecuted by the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. Federal crimes are prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. The two run separate cases, even when an arrest could fit either system.
What if the online docket is wrong or incomplete?
Contact the clerk's office for the court department. The clerk's official record controls over a third-party summary or a stale online entry. Online dockets can lag the paper file by days or weeks, and older Suffolk cases may not be online at all.
